Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, stated in a press briefing at the UN headquarters that in the third Doha meeting, the Taliban will be treated as de facto authorities in Afghanistan, but they will not be recognized as the official government of Afghanistan.
He added, “We want to ensure that the rightful role of women in society in Afghanistan is respected, as it should be everywhere in the world.”
Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, has also emphasized that the Taliban should not be treated as a legitimate government in the Doha meeting, and has called for meaningful participation of Afghan civil society members, especially women, in this meeting.
